Silencers muffle the sound of a pistol’s internal combustion and lower a bullet’s velocity to sub-mach speeds. This renders the weapon virtually impossible to hear at medium and long ranges. While a silencer enables quiet takedowns at range, the reduction in barrel velocity weakens the impact of each bullet, making the silencer a liability in a prolonged gunfight.
