Baldur’s Gate 3 Disappoints With Only 6 Wins at The Game Awards 2023

We don’t always know it this clear who will be winning the Game of the Year award, but 2023 definitely came with one of the strongest contenders: Baldur’s Gate 3 by Larian Studios, whose breaking records we covered again and again, from the time when it reached one of Steam’s highest counts for concurrent players, to just a month ago when the game won a record number of awards at Golden Joystick.

Now we finally got to see the results of The Game Awards 2023, and, strangely, Baldur’s Gate 3 didn’t win every single category. This shocking turn of fate was quite a surprise to their loyal fan base, a true knife to the gut. They can take refuge in what few, near-record-breaking amount of awards Baldur’s Gate 3 was able to score, at least, which are as follows:

  • Best Performance – Neil Newbon (Baldur’s Gate 3)
  • Best Community Support – Baldur’s Gate 3 (Larian Studios)
  • Best RPG – Baldur’s Gate 3 (Larian Studios)
  • Best Multiplayer – Baldur’s Gate 3 (Larian Studios)
  • Player’s Voice – Baldur’s Gate 3
  • Game of the Year – Baldur’s Gate 3 (Larian Studios)

If nothing else, as a consolation prize for not winning literally every single award, Baldur’s Gate 3 did receive the well-deserved Game of the Year award!

This affront (of only becoming one of the most well-awarded games of all time, instead of the most well-awarded game ever) means that Baldur’s Gate 3 ended up only 1 win behind 2020’s Game of the Year, The Last of Us Part 2, for most awards won at the Game Awards. This despite the fact that 2023 was only a much more competitive year for games than 2020, filled with fantastic titles (like Alan Wake 2 and Armored Core 6, for instance).

Truly, we don’t understand why Baldur’s Gate 3 didn’t win 31 out of 31 awards. Baldur’s Gate 3 should’ve won for “Best eSports Coach”. But, since it is over and done with, I guess us fans will have to be happy with it winning only 6 awards at the Game Awards. Somehow, I think we’ll make due.

What are your thoughts on today’s award ceremony? Did you feel like GOTY award was as certain as we did? Who did you think were other promising candidates this year?
