Lots of Items – Baldur’s Gate II

This guide is a collection of tips for gaining lots of items in Baldur’s Gate II. These tips were provided by GameBanshee users.

Mordenkainen Goodness

Greenstone Amulets are limitless, just summon a Mordenkainen’s Sword and kill it with magic missiles and it drops one but with only one charge and the protection it offers is short lived once activated.

Now here’s the catch, you don’t have to activate it. Just wearing it gives you imunity to charm, hold, dominaton, confusion, stun and other such spells, making it the best amulet in the game with the possible exception of the Sensate Amulet and the Amulet of Power.

Note: This only works with the Greenstone Amulets that you get from killing Mordenkainen’s Sword, it doesn’t work with ones you find

Golden Girdles Galore

It is actually possible to get near infinite Golden Girdles if you are a mage. Once you have your stronghold (the planar sphere) your first quest is to return the Solamnic Knights to their home. When the mage comes to send them back home, she will talk to you, and then the knights will give you the girdle. If you pause, and then talk to the mage again, you can get another. If you pause again, you can do the same thing over and over and over.

Books, Books, & More Books

You can easily gain as many “book[s] of infinite spells” as you want. Be sure to save before trying this. Simply fill up your character’s inventory and place the book in one of his or her quick item slots. Now return to the normal game screen and right click on the book, choose the turn a page option, turn the page, and wait until the dialogue box says your round is over (if you have auto-pause on). Now return to the inventory screen, there should be between 1-4 books on the ground. Try again or reload to your save if it didn’t work. You can repeat this as many times as you’d like.

The Captain’s Arrows

When you start Nalia’s Keep quest, you talk to “Captain Arat” in the palisaded fort before you enter the keep. Make sure you have Nalia with you (I am not sure if it works without her). Every time you talk to him you gain 20 fire arrows. It is quicker if you talk to him with Nalia.

Use the following lines:
First thing to say is the response 1 – he will say one sentence, then give you new options. Then, select response 4 – he will say about 5 sentences (if you don’t talk to him WITH Nalia, she starts talking as well). Then he gives you 20 fire arrows. Do this lots of times (I got over 18000 fire arrows, sold ,000 of them to ribald for 180gp/40arrows, 5000 to Bernard for 120gp/40arrows, gave each member in my part 6 quivers of 40 arrows each, and then hid the rest in a bookshelf in the back of the Adventurer’s Mart (I still haven’t run out of arrows). You can repeat this as many times as you want (and you can join to sets of 20 to make 40). Then either keep them or go back to a city and sell them off.

Good Ol’ Goreth

Goreth, the merchant in Mae’Var’s Guildhall is also the only person who will buy fenced items who also has unlimited items.

This is the guy in the front room running the pub. Usually, you talk to him to go and see Mae’Var. Instead, do the following:
Talk to him, ask to see what he sells. Buy all of the potions of thieving. Empty out your best thief’s inventory and drink three of the potions. Now talk to Goreth again, and use that thief to steal. Look for the Mace +2. Steal 16 of them, goto the buy/sell screen, and then sell them all.

You should get 500gp minimum from him per Mace +2 (I had reputation 18, so I got less money for them). You get around 8000gp total. Now repeat, steal 16 more mace +2s, and sell them back.

In 15 minutes, I raised my gold from 60,000gp to 370,000gp. Remember to do this BEFORE you take the documents back to Bloodscalp. If you do it afterwards, you can’t talk to Goreth because you killed him. :o)

Staves of the Woodlands and Mega Experience

The Avatar of Rillifane is very generous if you know how to deal with him. It’s very easy to get a whole bunch of Staves of the Woodlands if you immediately pause after your feedback screen says “party has gained an item” and then talk to him again. I assume this principle works in alot of situations in the game. But the kicker is that you can get literally as much experience as you want, as well as any number of staves, simply by emulating an old vending machine trick (the one where you tie a string to your quarter and keep pulling it out).

If you’ve played through this part before, you know that Rillifane appears right after you put the three symbols on his altar. But the experience award (68,000 or so per character) is given before he appears. What happens is that there is a tiny window of time between the awarding of that experience and the point when the items disappear from the altar. You can exploit this by placing the items on the altar, thereby triggering the Avatar, then pulling them off before they can disappear. Even though the Avatar goes through his whole speech and the game goes to a movie sequence, if you still have the cup, talisman, and moonblade when the game returns to normal, you can start the process all over again, as many times as you want.

Getting the items back before they disappear is kind of difficult though. Here is the best way to do it:

  1. Put all three items in the inventory of one character (mine had the speed boots, but I’m not sure if that makes any difference).
  2. Have that character click on the altar, bringing up the inventory exchange screen.
  3. Pause the game, then transfer the three items to the altar.
  4. Without unpausing, click on the altar again. This will instruct the character to access the altar almost immediately after you unpause in step 5.
  5. Unpause then pause again very very quickly, as if you were double-clicking a mouse button. This will bring up what looks to be the same inventory transfer screen, only it is a fraction of a second later and the Avatar should have been triggered.
  6. Transfer the items back into your pack. If you have been too slow in double-clicking the pause button, one or two of the items may have disappeared, as they go away one at a time. If this happens, reload. There is a slight chance that you can be too fast, though I think this has more to do with the in-game round timing. If this happens, the Avatar doesn’t get triggered, so just try again.
  7. Unpause the game a final time and wait for the Avatar to do his thing. Then repeat, ad infinitum.

Admittedly this strategy occurs rather late in the game, but if you need one of your guys to reach the next spell level before facing Irenicus, this is the way to go. Otherwise, I’ll bet this sort of thing would work elsewhere in the game.

Magic Resistance Times Two

On the Cult of the Unseeing Eye level of the Athkatla sewers, get the rod (as Gaal/Sassar suggest), and then talk to Toad to get him to open the descent to the Lower Reaches. Now head back and talk to Gaal again and instead of a big hug and thanks, he’ll call upon the Unseeing Eye.

However, since Sal has already opened the path down you can make a run for the Ghoul Lord bridge. If the Unseeing Eye doesn’t see you and you don’t attack him, he will stay where Gaal summoned him.

Now go to the Lower Reaches, kill the Unseeing Eye there, and grab his amulet. Head back up to the Cult of the Unseeing Eye map and now you have the pleasure of killing the unseeing eye AGAIN (what joy) and, of course, Gaal and friends. This will give you the amulet of magic resistance once more.

Save Grace Many Times

When the Unseeing Eye is dead, venture back to the avatar of Amauntor. When you approach the temple, a Diseased one will initiate dialog, and force you into the temple. Here you will (if in a nice mode) ask him to speak the name so that avatar can summon the strength to break the rod.

This sequence is in two pieces…

First, the diseased one speaks and you click “end dialog”.
Second, the Avatar speak you get the Saving Grace +3 shield and experience.

This is what an experience-hungry and shield-needing player does:

Pause after the Diseased one has spoken and initiate dialog again with him again. This will bring forth a number of Avatars who will all give the Saving Grace shield, as well as experience.

However.. if you’re too slow on the space bar, the diseased one will disappear.

I love RPGs, sandboxes, survival, and sim games. Anything that lets me build and decorate or just has a really good story. I've spent hundreds of hours in Bethesda games and even more time modding them. I also play a lot of World of Warcraft.
