Background

You’ll automatically receive this quest after completing the quest An Update (and learning that Bartrand is back in town).

Walkthrough

You’ll find Bartrand’s Estate in the southwestern part of Hightown (at night). Inside, after a funny sequence where Varric will single-handedly dispatch a whole host of Bartrand’s guards, reality will return, and you and your companions will have to explore the estate normally. After dealing with numerous crazed guards and traps (T), you’ll come to Hugin, Bartrand’s steward (#2). Hugin will tell you that Bartrand is crazy and that the idol he stole from the Deep Roads is “singing” to him.

Past Hugin you’ll come to Bartrand (#5). He’ll immediately stealth and head to the room at the bottom of the stairs, where you’ll have to fight him plus several more crazed guards. This battle will end once you’ve done enough damage to Bartrand, so if you have trouble then ignore the guards and concentrate on Bartrand.

When Bartrand stops fighting, you’ll get a chance to talk to him — at least to some degree — and you’ll learn that he sold the idol to a woman. You’ll then get a few ways to proceed:

  • You can let Varric kill Bartrand. This will earn you friendship points with Aveline and Varric, and rivalry points with Sebastian.

  • You can let Bartrand live. This will earn you friendship points with Sebastian, and rivalry points with Aveline and Varric.

  • If you have Anders in your party, then you can let Anders heal Bartrand. However, you’ll still have to choose between killing Bartrand and letting him live, and you’ll receive the same friendship / rivalry points as listed above, except for Varric, whose reaction will reverse (that is, you’ll get friendship points with him if you let Bartrand live, and you’ll get rivalry points if Bartrand dies).

Regardless of what you decide, you’ll receive the longsword Red Earth Long One and 1000 xp at the end of the quest.
