Overview

Your goal in this part of the ruins is to find the Helm of Fire for the quest “The Deeps of Gruldur.” For the most part, this will just require you to battle undead grolms as you make your way to Level 4.

When you reach the helm (#12), you’ll be attacked by a cyclops skeleton and several undead grolms. The grolms are very slow, so if you immediately leave the room and retreat back to the entrance of the level (Exit D), then you’ll probably be able to fight the skeleton in one battle and the grolms in another. You can also try using one character as bait (to lure the skeleton in circles around the helm) while the rest of your party kills the grolms.

To claim the Helm of Fire, you’ll need to click on the pedestal on the eastern side of the room (#13). That will cause the monolith containing the helm to lower enough so that you can reach it. Then when you click on the monolith, a dwarven ghost will appear. It will give you the helm plus a Teleporter Disc, and you’ll also receive 200 experience points. The Teleporter Disc will allow you to use the portal on Level 1 to return to Murolosh.

Back in Murolosh, you’ll be met by Devotee Lugosh, who will trigger the quest Madness in Murolosh. Your conversation with him will also complete the quest “The Deeps of Gruldur,” which will net you 200 experience points.

1 – Cyclopean Door

You’ll find the artifact for this door on Level 1.

2 – Dented Sapper’s Helmet

You’ll find a Dented Sapper’s Helmet in the collapsed tunnel here. Picking it up will trigger the quest “The Iron Cap.” When you take the helmet to Treasurer Otosh in Murolosh, he’ll recognize it as having belonged to one of his relatives, and he’ll reward you with 20 ducats and 50 experience points for bringing it to him.

3 – Fake Wall

Behind this wall you’ll find a chest containing Instructions for Thaloshrom’s Dwarven Skraja, Instructions for Diamond Whetstone, Instructions for Ironwood Crank, and Instructions for Meadowian Hatchet.

4 – Portcullis

You’ll only be able to open the portcullis by activating the rope winch on the northern side.

5 – Strange Apparitions

At these spots you’ll see ghosts of dwarves and grolms. These scenes are a part of the quest “Strange Apparitions.” You’ll receive 20 experience points at the first scene, and you’ll receive 30 experience points after defeating the grolm ghosts at the second scene.

6 – Grolm Puzzle

To make your way through this puzzle, you’ll need to activate the grolm switches in the following order: #6a, #6b, #6b, #6a, #6d, #6c, #6d. That will open the way to the corridor beyond, where you’ll find a Grolm Key (#6e). The key will unlock a door on Level 4 (#9).

7 – Stone Golems

You’ll have to battle a pair of stone golems here.

8 – Dwarven Treasure

Inside this chest you’ll find a History of the Grolm Wars, a Dwarven Amulet, a Tumlarbrag, 74 ducats, and more. When you loot the chest you’ll complete the quest “Strange Apparitions,” which will earn you 80 experience points. The Dwarven Amulet is a part of the quest “The Dwarven Ghost.” If you take the amulet back to the dwarven corpse on Level 1, then you’ll gain 50 experience points.

9 – Grolm Door

This door will start out locked. The only way to open it is to solve the puzzle and claim the key on Level 3 (see #6).

10 – Grolm Switch

Activating this switch will turn off the fire statue (#11).

11 – Fire Statue

The statue here will cast Ignisphaero Fireball every couple of seconds, and it’ll damage you even if you have fire protection. The only way to completely avoid being damaged by the statue is to head north (via the staircase at Exit E) and activate a grolm switch (#10).

12 – Cyclops Skeleton / Helm of Fire

After battling the cyclops skeleton, you’ll find a Cyclops Skull on its corpse. If you take the skull to Devotee Lugosh at the temple in Murolosh, then you’ll (briefly) trigger the quest “Rest in Peace,” and Lugosh will give you a Large Healing Potion, a Large Magic Potion, and a Large Endurance Potion. You’ll also receive 50 experience points.

13 – Pedestal

When you click on the pedestal, the monolith containing the Helm of Fire (#12) will lower, allowing you to take it.

14 – Door

This door will only open after you’ve claimed the Helm of Fire (#12).
