Background

You’ll receive this quest at the end of Chapter 3, when the Oracle names you the Champion of the Dragon Quest and sends you after Rakorium in the Moorbridge Marshes.

Walkthrough

You’ll arrive in Moorbridge near an inn (#1). If you go inside and question the patrons, then you’ll learn a few things, including that the undead have been plaguing the village recently, and that Rakorium and his two novices were last seen headed into the marshes. If you then talk to Militiaman Torfler outside of the village (#2), then he’ll tell you about some “flashes of lightning” that started up recently to the northwest.

Past Torfler, you’ll run into Undead Rufus and an undead mule (#3). You might remember Rufus from Avestrue. He was one of Rakorium’s novices then, but now he’s undead and you’ll have to kill him. You’ll receive 30 experience points at the end of the battle, and Rufus will drop Rakorium’s Recipe Book.

At Velonion’s Grave, you’ll find Rakorium and Novice Nottel hiding behind a lightning shield (#4), with some undead creatures trying to attack them. When you get close enough, the undead will notice you and attack you instead. After dispatching them, you’ll learn that Rakorium is trying to complete some sort of ritual, but that he can’t concentrate with all of the undead blundering about. Rakorium will then ask you to deal with the undead “hatchery” (some temple ruins) to the northwest. This will trigger the quest “A Magician’s Worries.”

You’ll encounter a necromancer in the temple ruins (#5). While he’s alive, he’ll periodically spawn undead creatures to attack you. If the undead creatures are easy for you to kill, then you might want to just let them come to you for a while, and grind some loot and experience. Otherwise, you should make a beeline for the necromancer and kill him right away.

When the necromancer dies, all of the undead creatures in the area will keel over dead, and they’ll stop spawning. Three quests (including The Boltan Card Trick) will then update, and you’ll receive a total of 75 experience points. You’ll also pick up a Crypt Key automatically, and you’ll find a Magician’s Staff and a Volcanic Glass Dagger on the necromancer’s corpse.

When you return to Rakorium (#4), you’ll finally learn why he’s in the marshes. He’ll tell you that he’s attempting to remove the “unusual crystal” from the Valonion’s statue here — but without damaging it, which means that he’ll need some rock vitriol. You’ll then help him out by handing over Rakorium’s Recipe Book, which contains the recipe for the vitriol, and you’ll earn 10 experience points.

To complete the recipe, you’ll need to locate three ingredients for Rakorium:

  • Mandrake. You’ll find this growing to the east (#7), slightly south of the evil tree (#6). You’ll get 25 experience points when you pick it up.

  • Harpy Egg Yolk. You’ll find a harpy nest to the west (#8). After killing the harpies there, when you attack their nest you’ll receive the yolk plus 30 experience points.

  • Rock Goblin Teeth. You’ll find a rock goblin hiding in a barrel in a crypt to the west (#9). When you kill it, you’ll automatically take its teeth, and you’ll also receive 35 experience points.

When you give Rakorium (#4) the three ingredients, he’ll complete the recipe, and he’ll use it to claim the crystal from Valonion’s statue. But then Valonion will come to life. He’ll immediately incapacitate Rakorium and Nottel, and then he’ll attack you. “How ssstupid of you mortals to believe you could rob me…. Prepare yourselves for a fate worssse than death!”

Valonion will start the fight with three Thunderbolts, but that will deplete his arcane energy, and so if you can survive that initial spell outburst, then you should be able to handle him easily enough. When Valonian dies you’ll complete the quest “A Magician’s Worries,” which will lock the Moorbridge Marshes, and you’ll receive 70 experience points. You’ll also automatically pick up the Greaves of Fire, and you’ll also find the Staff of Valonion (which gives +10 AE) on Valonion’s corpse.

After the battle, Rakorium and Nottel will wake up, and they’ll head off to Ferdok (where you’ll see them again in Ardo’s residence). When you return to Ferdok yourself, you’ll just need to report in to Dorion in the Temple of Hesinde in Praios Square to complete the quest. You’ll receive 200 experience points when you do.
