Mounts – Hogwarts Legacy

While there are several modes of transportation in Hogwarts Legacy, one of the most interesting is undoubtedly on the back of a mount. Whether it’s flying around the castle on a Hippogriff, or exploring the Forbidden Forest with your Thestral, It’s an image that has been fostered in the imaginations of fans for years. Let’s take a look at the fantastical mounts in Hogwarts Legacy.

All Mounts in Hogwarts Legacy

Mounts are faster on the ground, but they also can fly and are a good way for players to travel and explore longer distances. As the game progresses, the player will need to travel farther from Hogwarts: mounts are excellent tools for the player in these endeavors (I know, sorry, I referred to the cute creature as a tool).

Here are all the mounts in Hogwarts Legacy:

  • Thestral– A mount that might suite those with macabre tastes, the Thestral has a slim, dark frame and resembles a Pegasus. Those who are more familiar with the lore will know that only people who have seen death can see Thestrals.
  • Hippogriffs – A classic mount in the Harry Potter universe that has made appearance after appearance in the franchise. It wouldn’t be right if players didn’t have access to this fantastical creature. Hippogriffs a mix between an eagle and a horse, and make the perfect mount for any witch or wizard.
  • Graphorn – The only mount without the ability to fly is the Graphorn. However, the Graphorn makes up for it by being an invaluable ally in combat.

We will go over how to unlock each of these mounts below.

How to Get the Thestral Mount

The Thestral mount is rather easy to obtain, if you have the coin. Sadly, not the in-game kind: it is unlocked by buying either the game’s Deluxe Edition or the Hogwarts Collector’s Edition.

As a reminder, here’s all the bonus content players can acquire from these two editions:

  • Thestral Mount
  • Dark Arts Battle Arena
  • Dark Arts Cosmetic Set
  • Dark Arts Garrison Hat
  • 72 Hours Early Access

Along with receiving it from DLC, players can also capture Thestrals from Beast dens to store in their Vivarium. Thestrals can be found in North Ford Bog and near Marunweem Lake.

How to Get the Hippogriff Mount

Players will naturally obtain the Hippogriff as they progress in the story. Specifically, players will gain the Hippogriff mount after helping Natsai Onai in the quest line named “The High Keep“. This quest’s level requirement is level 17, so don’t expect to be zipping around Hogwarts’ skies on a Hippogriff in the first hour of playing (you can get some practice by using a Flying Broom until then).

Besides the Hippogriff obtained in the story, players can also capture other Hippogriffs from various Beast dens. You can find them in Feldcroft and the Forbidden Forest.

Onyx Hippogriff

It’s also worth noting that you can get a different type of Hippogriff as free DLC. This Hippogriff is called the Onyx Hippogriff. Its feathers are jet black, unlike the white and brown feathers of the original.

How to get the Graphorn Mount

Unlocking the Graphorn will require progressing pretty far into the main story. During the San Bakar’s Trial quest, you’ll be tasked with defeating a Graphorn in battle and capturing it. This will make the beast available as a mount.

After the quest, you can capture more Graphorns while exploring. Return to the area where you encountered the first Graphorn and you’ll find a new Graphorn ready to do battle. Capturing this one will give you the option of breeding Graphorns in your Vivarium, so you can avoid fighting more of them.

What about Flying Brooms?

Flying Brooms are another excellent way to traverse the rugged terrain of the regions surrounding Hogwarts. However, they are not the same as mounts and have some key differences.

For one, they each reside in two separate slots of the gear menu; for another, Mounts are considerably faster when traveling on the ground as opposed to by air. Brooms are also able to reach max flying speed a little quicker than mounts. Lastly, You don’t have to feed broomsticks – Ok, that last one was a joke.

We hope you are enjoying soaring through the skies on your fantastical mounts. If you have any suggestions or tips for using your mounts, let us know in the comments!
