Legend of Grimrock Reviews

We have rounded up another small batch of mostly positive reviews for Almost Human’s first title, the first-person Eye of the Beholder-like dungeon crawler Legend of Grimrock.

Destructoid goes with a glowing 9.5/10.

A lot of people bring up Dungeon Master when looking at Legend of Grimrock. I had never played Dungeon Master before, so I went ahead and took a crack at it. After playing it for a bit, it’s clear that they are indeed very similar. However, Legend of Grimrock has all of the conveniences that you’d expect a game to have in 2012, like improved visuals and better UI. If you’re like me and this is your first foray into the world of first-person dungeon crawling, don’t worry! If you are at all interested in what it brings to the table, you’ll have a wonderful and exciting jaunt through this dungeon. While there aren’t many dungeon environments and the occasional “trap” rooms can be a bit annoying, these small issues are relatively minor quibbles when compared to the greater experience.

I have to give Almost Human a lot of credit. The level design, enemy placement, and especially the puzzles are all, by and large, wonderfully crafted. There are a few instances where the “traps” seem more unfair than clever, but that hardly tarnishes what is otherwise a terrific experience. You’ll be hard-pressed to find a modern game like Legend of Grimrock any time soon, but with a game of this quality, you won’t need one.

Oh, and remember to save often.

EDGE is more restrained, per usual, 7/10.

On its own terms, Legend Of Grimrock is a success. It recreates its idol and drinks deep from a reservoir of nostalgic goodwill. It can’t have the same gobsmacking impact as its inspiration, but this is a simple, engaging and occasionally baffling journey in its own right, with plenty of hooks to snare the newcomer

The Penny Arcade Report, scoreless.

Legend of Grimrock is focused and classical in its design, but it never feels like dry or anachronistic. There is also another layer of the story to unravel as you play, and monsters grow in numbers, size, and strength. Learning to quickly move from tile to tile and attack using the strengths of all four characters isn’t as easy as it first seems, and the combat is very different than what we’re used to from modern fantasy or adventure games. I often felt like I was using strategies from my monthly table-top RPG battles, which is a very good thing in a single-player PC game. There is only one dungeon included in the game, but it’s going to take you over 10 hours to see everything the game has to offer. The team is also working on tools to allow fans to create their own dungeons, so more content is coming.

The Controller Online, 8/10.

Whether you’re a fan of classic PC dungeon crawlers, looking to play one but can’t run any of the old games on your new PC, or just looking for something that’s different you won’t be disappointed with Legend of Grimrock. Almost Human have lovingly resurrected a dead genre and added just the right amount of modern elements. While the pace might not be quite what some gamers are looking for, there is a lot to love inside these bleak halls.

Short & Sweet Reviews, 10/10.

The game is aiming for a very, very niche crowd. While the price point is low, there is no middle ground. Either you’ll love this game or hate it, but if you aren’t the latter, you’ll enjoy one of the most hardcore games in this generation.
