Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition Reviews

A trio of new reviews for Overhaul Games’ Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition are upon us, and while two of them are mostly favorable, it appears that the editors at PCG felt about the same way we did.

PC Gamer gives it a 77/100:

In the end it’s a judgement call.

If you’d prefer the convenience of BG:EE, it’s a perfectly acceptable version. But the fact that you’re reading this here suggests that you have some PC gaming nous, and a properly modded copy of the original release is ultimately the superior experience. That fact alone is a saving throw against what should have been a glorious comeback.

VGW gives it a :

Looking back at my time playing with Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition, part of me is glad my younger self never got around to finishing it the first time I played. It’s been both an interesting blast from the past, a head-shaking reminder of how much I loathed THAC0 while playing D&D, and an interesting look at early BioWare game elements which were refined for future franchises like Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Mass Effect and Dragon Age. Not to mention it’s a good, meaty, straightforward RPG.

And Gaming Illustrated gives it an 85%:

Baldur’s Gate is an expansive world ripe with various terrains, towns, ruins, and opportunities. The variety of friends and pursuits to be had keeps Baldur’s Gate energetic and entertaining for players. Hours may transpire before gamers realize they haven’t paused or taken a break. Baldur’s Gate claims to have over 50 hours of gameplay and The Black Pits boasts an additional 6 hours of gameplay suggesting players will be busy for a long, long time. These hours may not take into account how many times a player rebuilds a character, learning how to further improve their character build with each play through. However long one particular player plays, they can feel confident they purchased their money’s worth with Baldur’s Gate.
