Chris Avellone Working on New Fantasy Setting Project

There’s an interesting interview with Chris Avellone on his role as chief creative officer at Obsidian Entertainment over at PCGamesN. Of particular note is the fact that, according to the interview, Obsidian’s CCO and co-founder is currently developing background lore, environment concepts and companions for a new fantasy setting, as part of his responsibilities as the project lead for an unannounced title.

It’s a small snippet, so it’s difficult to judge the scope and state of the project, but it’s still worth highlighting:

As it happens, Avellone is currently the creative lead on a new project. The precise makeup of his workday changes from month to month, but lately he’s designed lore and background material for a new fantasy world – conceiving environments and coming up with companions.

Even as someone who mostly enjoyed what he’s seen and read of Pillars of Eternity’s setting, I do hope the enveloped will be pushed a little further for this project.

I recommend reading the full interview, as it also includes some interesting thoughts on RPG dialogue systems, the writing process at Obsidian, his reputation as a “human stretch goal” and more. Considering how many interview the man gives, it’s not easy to stand out, so props to the interviewer for asking the right questions.
