We have rounded up another handful of relatively positive reviews for Capcom’s first attempt at crafting an open-world fantasy action-RPG, Dragon’s Dogma.

Neoseeker, 7/10.

In most ways, Dragon’s Dogma is a successful game, and it’s definitely worth playing if you’re looking for an easier alternative to Dark Souls with a heavy hack ‘˜n’ slash feel. RPG fanatics will recognize shades of other role-playing titles coloring every aspect of the game; the quest system takes a page from Elder Scrolls, difficulty is fashioned after the Souls series, and monster battles mirror those in Shadow of the Colossus. Just because Dogma draws its inspiration from high caliber games, however, doesn’t make it the pinnacle of its genre. The lack of both identity and polish is something that should be addressed if Dogma hopes to become a serious contender.

Yet Capcom made Dragon’s Dogma a lot of fun, and in the end, that might be the most important factor to this equation. For better or worse, Dogma remains a JRPG at heart despite wearing the trappings of Western influence, yet the gameplay is solid and incredibly engaging, which ought to win over most JRPG skeptics. This is an IP that could be developed into successful franchise, assuming it receives some proper TLC.

If one can get past the annoying menu song, and the bland and barely engaging storyline this game is definitely lived up to expectations. It can match Skyrim with quality cut scenes, epic battles, and a really addicting gameplay that one really can’t find in many JRPGs currently. One can suggest on trying the demo first before one buys it in order to get a feel for what this title has to offer. If you buy it and end up wanting to go elsewhere, there’s always a bundled demo code for Resident Evil 6.

Worthplaying, 7.5/10.

Dragon’s Dogma is a fantastic combat system wrapped in a boring package. When it is on, it is one of the most intense, exciting and engrossing games I’ve ever played. When it is off, it can put you to sleep before you see a sign of a chimera or Cyclops. The character creation and combat development is involved enough to make me want to come back. It is a testament to the combat that it can hold one’s attention through an endless swarm of escort missions, MMO-style item grinding and the blasé plot. The inconsistent difficulty is also a potential turnoff for many players. There’s a lot to like in Dragon’s Dogma if you’re willing to look past the plain exterior.

For all the time and work that went into Dragon’s Dogma, it could have used a whole lot more to tighten up all the facets of the game. It was far from what I was hoping it would be and so it just falls into that middle of the pack range of games. Overall, it’s not terrible, but not great. I thought it would be far more than it is and that probably serves as a warning to game publishers, tooting your horn all too much before the game is released, probably means you’re going to disappoint us all when it is out. So perhaps err on the side of caution, something the games industry has never really embraced.
