Dungeon Siege/NWN Interview

Neverwinter Haven has posted up a 5-question interview with Chris Taylor [archive.org backup], lead developer of the upcoming RPG from Gas Powered Games, Dungeon Siege. The interview focuses on the differences between Neverwinter Nights and Dungeon Siege. Here’s one of the questions:

Q: What are the main differences between your game editor and NWN’s ?

A: Unfortunately I am not familiar with the feature set of the NWN editor so I can’t really say, but from quickly reading some stuff on the web, it sounds like the NWN editor will be a very powerful tool to create some awesome scenarios. It’s really a great time for all of us who are into creating our own worlds. With the Siege Editor, we are providing as much power to the end-user as we had here in development, and try to push more and more each day to expose more of the engine to the scenario designer.

As the original source is no longer available, we’ve replicated the interview here for posterity’s sake:

Chris Taylor on NWN – 24/04

Reported By: Shock

We got hold of Chris Taylor, lead-developper of Dungeon Siege, a fantasy RPG, which looks to me as the biggest competitor that NWN will have. Chris Taylor answered five questions concerning the biggest differences between Neverwinter Nights and Dungeon Siege. To see what Chris had to say click on ‘Read More’. We will be trying to interview developpers of other potential competitors of NWN, if we can get hold of them.

Here are the questions :

1 Describe shortly the game you are designing.

Dungeon Siege is an action fantasy RPG that allows up to eight characters in your party that takes the player on an adventure through a huge and continuous 3D world. With a solid focus on action, we are also introducing elements of strategy that take combat to another level, hopefully one that has never been done in an RPG before.

2 What are the most important differences you think between it and Neverwinter Nights ?

I don’t really have a list of features to compare against NWN, but I know the most obvious one is that we are not using the D&D; rules. To answer the question In the more general sense I think that our emphasis on the action and strategy elements provides a huge seperation in the experience that each game has to offer.

3 What do you think of Neverwinter Nights ? (be honnest, you can totally destroy it if you want)

I think NWN is an awesome game concept and can’t wait to play it as it is a very different experience from what we are creating.

4 What are the main differences between your game editor and NWN’s ?

Unfortunately I am not familiar with the feature set of the NWN editor so I can’t really say, but from quickly reading some stuff on the web, it sounds like the NWN editor will be a very powerful tool to create some awesome scenarios. It’s really a great time for all of us who are into creating our own worlds. With the Siege Editor, we are providing as much power to the end-user as we had here in development, and try to push more and more each day to expose more of the engine to the scenario designer.

5 And finally : will you be buying NWN ? =p

Absolutely, I’ll be grabbing my copy asap!

Thank you Chris !
