Destiny 2’s Final Shape Launch Trailer Hints at Vanguard Faltering

Now that we’re only a week out from the launch of Destiny’s newest expansion, The Final Shape, Bungie has decided that now is the time to drop the cinematic launch trailer. If you haven’t watched it yet, then you’re in for a treat. You’ll find the trailer below, as well as some of our thoughts on it.

This expansion is the finale for Destiny 2’s Light and Darkness saga, and it feels that way with the gravitas of this trailer. Compared to previous expansions, it appears there are a lot more cutscenes and story beats. It also has a darker mood, owing to the seriousness of the situation in which our characters find themselves.

The last expansion, Lightfall, was more centered around new characters, and had a lighter vibe — even sporting a training montage that would’ve fit well in a 80s action flick. This strategy didn’t go over well with the community, and most consider the last expansion’s story to be significantly lacking.

It seems that the devs took this criticism to heart, and player’s will better feel the weight of the moment this time around. Also unlike the previous expansion, this time we will be fighting shoulder to shoulder with the main cast that’s been there since the beginning, the Vanguard (Ikora, Zavala, and Cayde). It is therefore only fitting that the main crew will take center stage on this one. Of course, plenty of other characters will progress their arcs, but the trailer hints at a major shakeup in the current leadership of the Guardians — especially with Commander Zavala.

Did this trailer make you more excited about the expansion? Is there a story beat that you wish they had showed? Tell us in the comments!
