Freedom Force vs. the Third Reich Diary #1

IGN PC has begun a new diary series, this time for Irrational Games’ upcoming Freedom Force sequel. In the first installment, manager and creative director Ken Levine talks about different character ideas and how they come up with them. A snippet:

Back when we were creating characters for the original Freedom Force, Robb created one character that he quickly became very attached to. I however, felt that he didn’t really fit the aesthetic of the first game. He seemed too dark and menacing to me. We decided to put him on hold for a while. Robb admits that he can become pretty stubborn when it comes to his creations. I promised him we’d revisit the character later.

Sure enough, as soon as we began work on Freedom Force vs. The Third Reich, Robb was already reworking the character. Finally, I said okay, we’ve got a slightly darker theme with World War II, but the character is still not there. I gave him a few more suggestions, trying to move the character in a more tragic direction. Robb removed the mouth from his mask, set his eyes deeper and darker, touched up his costume and suddenly the character was telling a story. Boom. Tombstone came together.
