GameBryo and Torque Game Engines Possibly Discontinued

Some bad news out there on a pair of game engines that have been used for a number of RPG projects over the past few years. First off is Emergent Game Technologies, owner of GameBryo (Oblivion, Fallout 3, Fallout: New Vegas), who are liquidating assets.

Emergent Game Technologies has fallen. Their attempt to resurrect themselves in September with the Krome Studio partnership was short-lived. Days after the Emergent/Krome announcement came word that Krome was shuttering its studio, leaving little doubt that Emergent’s days were numbered as well.

Emergent was able to secure over $30 million in funding over the years and secured a number of key accounts in China including Tencent. It obviously wasn’t enough. We hope the assets find a good home.

Second is online distributor Instant Action, who are shutting down and looking to find someone to take over management of the Torque Game Engine (Minions of Mirth, Age of Decadence, Penny Arcade Adventures).

“Today, InstantAction informed employees that it will be winding down operations,” wrote Eric Preisz, director of InstantAction’s Torque game engine operations on Torque’s community forum.

“While we are shutting down the InstantAction.com website and Instant Jam game, Torquepowered.com will continue to operate while InstantAction explores opportunities with potential buyers for Torque,” he added. “We thank all of our past and current customers for their support.”
