Gaming’s Original Sin

IGN PC has published a three-page article entitled “Gaming’s Original Sin”, in which they explore why there are so many game sequels being developed rather than games based on original IP. In addition, BioWare joint-CEO Ray Muzyka offers commentary throughout the article, providing his own input on why original properties are tough to develop:

“Developing new properties while striving to maintain commercial viability is a difficult challenge, and the results of this balancing act are starting to become visible in the video game business right now,” comments Ray Muzyka, joint CEO and Co-Executive Producer, along with Greg Zechuk, at BioWare — a studio which is now focused sharply on original properties. In April, BioWare and Microsoft gave us Jade Empire, a martial arts RPG played in an original, mythical Asian setting. The company is also working on Dragon Age, another original RPG property, as well as a third, unannounced original IP.
