GWENT: The Witcher Card Game Moving Towards Maintenance Mode

The age of tie-in CCG is now officially over, with CD Projekt sunsetting support for Gwent: The Witcher Card Game. According to this IGN article, the game will be receiving a series of sizable updates throughout 2023, after which it will be switching to what’s being positioned as a “community-focused approach” where a limited number of developers will keep the game running for years to come.

A few paragraphs from IGN’s article:

CD Projekt Red told IGN that a small number of developers will keep Gwent running from this point onwards, with all remaining team members being transferred to other projects at the studio.

Project Gwentfinity will see a seasonal progression system added to the game that rewards creative deckbuilding alongside a new balancing feature that allows the community to vote for changes to balance, though CD Projekt Red said restrictions will be in place to prevent manipulation and “game-breaking” changes.

And in related news, CD Projekt will also be shutting down The Witcher: Monster Slayer, their location-based AR game, on June 30, 2023. More on that:

Dear Witchers,

Sadly, we have to announce that our journey with The Witcher: Monster Slayer is coming to an end. We will be shutting down the game on the 30th of June, 2023.

We are proud that we were able to create a location-based AR experience that captured what it was like to be a witcher in real life and gave the community a chance to battle Witcher-world monsters up close and in person. This is what made The Witcher: Monster Slayer such a unique experience in The Witcher franchise.

We are very thankful for sharing all of this with such an amazing and passionate community from all over the world. This journey, filled with quests, events, and adventure, would not have been possible without you — together, we defeated over 100 million monsters worldwide, after all!

Thank you for slaying with us,

Spokko team

P.S. The game will be available on the App Store and Google Play Store until the 31st of January, 2023. From the 1st of February, the game will go through some major changes, leading up to the closing of the game, on the 30th of June 2023.
