Heroes of Ruin Reviews

We have rounded up a couple of new reviews for the 3DS loot-driven action-RPG Heroes of Ruin, which so far has garnered a decent reception from the specialized press.

Destructoid, 7/10.

I said at the top of the review that Heroes of Ruin was a double-edged sword. Specifically, it’s great to have a dungeon-crawler on the 3DS, one that’s not only solid, but provides a suitable set of online features. However, Ruin is riddled with minor annoyances that never seem to let up, and progress becomes so predictable that it’s a struggle to get through those last few mandatory dungeons. It’s a good game, undoubtedly, and there’s plenty to enjoy, but the nature of the experience is such that it just makes me want more and better — something as fun as this, without the setbacks. Heroes of Ruin didn’t so much sate my appetite for portable action-RPGs as make me yearn for more. That is, at least, a point in Ruin’s favor — it’s entertaining to the point that I want to further my experience rather than lessen it.

Praises and complaints aside, Heroes of Ruin does exactly what it wanted to do — give 3DS users a solid hack n’ slash RPG. While it flounders on the way to that simple goal, it’s a goal that has been undoubtedly reached. Better may come along in the future, but right now, this does the trick.

Slant Magazine, 2/5.

If you own a 3DS and desire nothing other than a portable multiplayer dungeon-crawler with adequate loot-hording and strictly par online interactions, then Heroes of Ruin just might be your new jam. Contrariwise, for gamers who appreciate even a speck of inspired originality and artistry in their video games, and who have grown increasingly weary of being force-fed homogenous, unseemly content ad nauseam, it would be best to avoid this categorical oversight at all costs.
