Jonric Leaves RPG Vault, Website’s Future Uncertain

Just before E3, RPG Vault’s Richard “Jonric” Aihoshi announced that IGN had cancelled his contract in anticipation of “ceasing publication” of the long-running RPG website.

Today marks the end of a highly fulfilling period in my life. IGN has canceled my contract to work on RPG Vault, so this is my last day doing so. I’ve had a great run, starting back around 12 years ago when Vault Network was still an independent. I started writing about games as another way to enjoy them, with no thought of ever making a cent. So, I certainly didn’t imagine that it would turn into a full-time career for a decade.

I hope anyone interested enough to read this column has enjoyed the fruits of my labors. It has always been my goal to provide content that’s not found elsewhere. That’s why the site has never been heavily weighted to previews and reviews, even though they draw the most eyeballs. And I feel very fortunate I was never forced to go in that direction.

While I haven’t seen any kind of official announcement, it’s my understanding that RPG Vault will cease publishing. As for me, I will continue to do some writing for other publications, but only part-time since my primary focus has shifted to other types of work. They are still within the game industry, so I’ll be around, just not visible five days a week.

What a shame. Thanks, Luca.
