Overlord Reviews

Several new reviews of Codemasters and Triumph Studios’ Overlord made their way to the web earlier this week. The first is at IGN with an overall score of 6.6/10:

With a $60 price tag that is a full $20 more than the PC version, one would expect (demand?) a certain level of polish that Overlord lacks. A patch to fix the bugs may well be on the way, but that doesn’t save those without Xbox Live the dread of having the game crap out on them at any moment. And who knows how soon, if at all, the game will be fixed? You may find your investment in time and money flushed down the drain. Without the bugs, this game would have scored in the high 7s, but game ending flaws are unacceptable and have completely soured the otherwise fun time I had with the game. Overlord is a “play at your own risk” title. If you’re lucky enough to avoid the bugs, you’ll find a fun game unlike any other on Xbox 360. If you do run head first into a game ending bug, don’t say we didn’t warn you.

The second is at TotalVideoGames with an overall score of 8/10:

Highly imaginative and with a wicked sense of humour, Overlord’s issues are easy to overlook when compared to the moments of entertainment it provides in between.

The third is at GameZone with an overall score of 8.0/10:

Overlord is a fun game that offers a unique take to both the action-RPG and RTS genres, while offering a darkly humorous storyline. Plus, the game’s evil edge makes for an added incentive for those of you out there with secret desires for destruction.

The fourth is at TechConnect Magazine with an overall score of 8.0/10:

Overlord’s minions are the cutest thing to come along in gaming since the Lemmings, and the game itself is packed full of enough content to keep the average player going for 30 hours at least, which is an rarity in this age of 10 hour games. It even has a slew of multiplayer modes for fans, though don’t expect Overlord on Overlord action to revolutionize online gaming. It’s a fun diversion, and no more. The single player campaign, with all its quirks and cute take on evil actions (fear not, players still get to slaughter and enslave if they so wish.. but the minions always remain cute) is where the game is at, and hats off to Triumph for delivering what may well be the most unashamedly fun game on the PC this year. Get the demo, soak in the evil fumes, and consider a career in evil lording…

The fifth is at Xbox 360 Advanced with an overall score of 7.5/10:

Overlord is far from perfect, but it does contain a very interesting mixture of fantasy role playing and real-time strategy. It’s unique enough that even gamers that don’t enjoy either genre might have some fun with it. With beautiful presentation, unique gameplay and a great sense of humor, Overlord could be a sleeper hit this summer.

And the sixth is at Pro-G with an overall score of 7/10:

Overlord is an entertaining game that should keep you smiling for its duration, but certain control complexities and a distinct lack of evil keep it from being a truly great next-gen adventure. As much as I enjoyed slaughtering fluffy sheep, this Overlord is no more evil than my old headmaster.
