SpellForce 3 E3 2017 Coverage and Beta Access

Reading descriptions like “the genre mixer inspired by Baldur’s Gate” continues to raise my interest level in THQ Nordic’s SpellForce 3 as I take in the E3 2017 coverage for the RTS/RPG crossbreed. We begin with a two-and-a-half-minute video featuring both an interview and gameplay footage from NVIDIA:

And then we jump over to a video preview of the multiplayer component, provided by MMOHuts:

Before finishing with a preview on Polygon:

As someone who enjoys both a good isometric role-playing game and a good real-time strategy game, I’m ashamed to say that, until a few weeks ago, I had never heard of the SpellForce series. But after a demo during a pre-E3 event in California, SpellForce 3 suddenly looks very interesting.

During my short playthrough, the game presented itself as a traditional top-down RPG in the style of Baldur’s Gate or Pillars of Eternity. But then, at the end of the first dialogue-heavy quest, I was given command of a small patrol. I had a half-dozen cavalry, some men at arms and archers at my disposal to tool around the map with and secure objectives.

As a final note, I’ll point out that the Humble Bundle E3 2017 digital ticket includes beta access to SpellForce 3 for a $1.00 entry fee. Well worth it, in my opinion.
