The Audio of South Park: The Stick of Truth GDC 2014 Presentation

Now that we’re getting closer to the release of South Park: The Fractured But Whole, it might be worth it to revisit some of the challenges that Obsidian Entertainment met when developing South Park: The Stick of Truth.

GDC recently uploaded a GDC 2014 session from audio director Justin Bell, who explained the characteristics of South Park sound design, how hard it was to make combat sound exciting but still like South Park, the various iterations needed to find the right looping tracks for exploration, and the hurdles of working with a much faster VO pipeline than usually seen in a videogame.

Interestingly, it seems like a lot of the decisions taken on the audio side came from Trey Parker and Matt Stone’s interest in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim:
