The Glorious Path to Massively Multiplayer Success

Warcry has dished up a new article entitled “The Glorious Path to Massively Multiplayer Success” that discusses many of the more popular MMORPGs and what makes them a success or a failure in the editor’s eyes. An excerpt, as usual:

Beside the financial rewards of subscription based games there are lots of other reasons to go into MMOG development. Marc Laukien, CEO of Mutable Realms and developer of the upcoming Wish said creating Wish was a labor of love for his entire team and that it was very important for them to build something never done before.

Marc explained that he felt that the massively multiplayer online market has become very saturated and that the first obstacle was coming up with original ideas that allowed his team to set themselves apart. Wish’s base technology secures that they’ll be able to be one of the first to offer truly ultra massively multiplayer gaming to gamers. We’re talking tens of thousands of simultaneous players, not just thousands in different servers. While this was definitely ground-breaking, it was still not enough for the ambitious developer. To Marc, the major hole he’s seen in massively multiplayer games is that there has been a lack of focus on the RPG aspects that helped make it so popular.
