The Lord of the Rings: War in the North “Power of Three” Trailer and Urgost Profile

Warner Bros. and Snowblind Studios have treated us to a bevy of new content for The Lord of the Rings: War in the North today, including a new “Power of Three” trailer narrated by voiceover legend Don LaFontaine, as well as an overview and new concept art and screenshots for Urgost, a fire-breathing dragon we’ll be encountering during our Middle-earth adventures. It is a common misconception that Smaug was the last dragon in Middle-earth, but The Lord of the Rings canon makes it clear that not only was he not the last dragon, he was not even the last fire-breathing dragon.

When speaking to Frodo of the history of the Ring, Gandalf mentions that dragons were once capable of destroying Rings of Power with the heat of their breath, but he specifically states that there are no dragons remaining in Middle-earth with such power. Nearly 80 years after the death of Smaug, Gandalf implies that fire-breathing dragons might still be found in Middle-earth.

Urgost is one such fire breathing dragon (sometimes known as fire-drakes). Fire-drakes are the greatest of the dragons remaining in the world during the waning years of the Third Age. They are huge, powerful creatures with cunning minds equal to that of any Man, Dwarf or Elf.

Like all of his kind, Urgost is an inherently wicked creature, inclined to evil. He considers all mortal creatures his inferiors.

Dragons have an all-consuming lust for wealth and riches and a desire to possess and horde items of beauty and power. They are extremely jealous of their wealth and they possess a supernatural ability to know the exact value of their horde down to the last copper coin. They will relentlessly pursue and destroy anyone who takes from them even the least thing of value.

In spite of his power and lust for treasure, Urgost has a strong sense of self-preservation. He knows history and has seen greater dragons than himself destroyed when they overreached themselves. For this reason he has kept a low profile, nursing his plans and schemes, waiting for the right opportunity to present itself.
