The Surge Previews

Deck13’s action-RPG The Surge is getting released on May 16, 2017. With less than a week before its release, we have a couple of previews/early look videos to help you make an informed decision. Check them out:

PCGamesN is totally hooked by the game’s mechanics:

With Dark Souls III’s last offering of DLC now out the series is officially at an end, which means plenty of Souls fans will be looking for their next fix of tough-as-nails action-RPG goodness. The Surge deserves better than the status of rebound game. Six hours in and it has me totally hooked by its multi-faced progression mechanics, compelling learning curve and punishing combat. Every nook and cranny of its levels has been meticulously considered to ensure you’re rewarded for looking beyond the obvious path, whether that reward is a new enemy type with unique armour or a shortcut to make your life a little bit easier. Sure it owes the vast majority of its mechanics to one of the most esteemed franchises of all time, but after a couple of hours the similarities start to drop off as it establishes its own twist on the Souls formula – after six hours it feels like its own game, and a really good one at that.

Trusted Reviews considers it an improvement over Deck13’s previous attempt at a Souls-like game, Lords of the Fallen:

The Surge looks to be more about making interesting refinements to the Souls genre than completely taking it in a new direction. Despite that, the sci-fi setting and limb-targeting mechanics are a nice touch, and the combat here feels infinitely more responsive than the sluggish skirmishes that plagued Lords Of The Fallen.

But although its clever systems are built to keep players coming back for more, after seeing how punishing its boss fights and later enemies became, I’m concerned that this game could actually be too hellishly difficult – even for hardened FromSoftware fans. If that worry sounds like more of a plus point to you, then The Surge could well be a great way to fill that Souls-shaped hole in your heart.

Then, there’s Giant Bomb and its hour-long ‘Quick Look’ video:
