Victor Vran Reviews

We have rounded up a small number of additional reviews for Victor Vran. While some are more positive than others (Eurogamer’s Christian Donlan found the game really charming and recommended it, while GameSpot’s Cameron Woolsey found problems in almost every element of the game), they all seem to agree that the game’s system design and tone help set it apart from the horde of similar ARPGs that are currently out on the market.

Eurogamer recommends it:

More than all that, the game’s just extremely personable. The story is forgettable, but it’s delivered via Victor’s schlocky pronouncements and a playful, teasing, taunting voice in his head that seeks to unsettle you at every turn. (“Victor, you need a vigilante name. How about Hatman?”) Equally, alongside the swamps and crypts you’re expecting, you get standout locations like the Forlorn Chateau, a haunted mansion with a seriously unpleasant attic that delivers one of the most charismatic ARPG maps I’ve visited in quite a while. Sure, even middling ARPGs are almost always fun for an hour or so, but Victor Vran will keep you hitting stuff and collecting loot for a lot longer than you might expect.

Game Grin, 7.5/10.

Victor Vran really is a very standard dungeon crawler, as apart from those slightly unusual moments, there’s not a whole lot to distinguish it from other titles in the genre – comparisons with better games like Diablo 3 and Torchlight 2 will be difficult to ignore. Yet for those looking for something to quell their desire for loot (of which there is plenty, if not all that much consequential, in Victor Vran), this game should happily fill that need. What the game provides, it provides well, and Haemimont deserves credit for creating a good first foray into this market. If nothing else, it feels like a game that really needs a sequel to help get a decent story and more expansive world alongside the excellent gameplay that’s already in place. Victor Vran is worth a go, just don’t expect it to be a time-sink akin to other dungeon crawlers, it simply doesn’t have the longevity.

Gaming Nation UK, 8/10.

Victor Vran is the game that ARPG fans have been waiting for, and it’s been worth the wait. If you have hundreds of hours racked on diablo already, this is for you. If you’re currently thinking, ‘˜what’s a diablo?’ this is also for you.

GameSpot, 6/10.

There are problems with just about every aspect of Victor Vran. The issues range from small to large, from the glitches to frequent crashes and audio cutouts. Still, there’s a lot to enjoy about it. Not only is it aesthetically pleasing, but the entertaining combat, above all else, is what would get me to return and burn away more hours hunting the creatures of the night. The lack of content and variety is a concern, though this may be alleviated with the planned free DLC. Victor Vran has more demons than just the ones that haunt its macabre streets, but with some time and healing, it could end up much stronger.
