Junkyard – Rust Monument Guide

In this guide, we will be exploring the Junkyard monument. This guide contains the general strategy and meta for the monument, a map with Crate spawn locations, and callouts so you can more easily navigate the monument. It also has information on how to use the Magnetic Crane and Shredder within Junkyard.

For info on how to read the map and some more general information about the guide, please refer to the Map Key in the Main Guide.

General Info

Junkyard is, by far, the largest tier-one monument, and one of the most interesting. It is usually found in the forest/plains biome, where it stands out thanks to its rusty red color and dilapidated appearance (even more so than the rest of the game). It has a very decent variety of Crates, a green card, and a moving crane and shredder that add a dynamic factor to both resource collection and PvP strategy.

Strategy and Meta

Thanks to its huge size and moving objects, Junkyard is an extremely dynamic area. This can make it a fierce battleground, so be prepared for PvP before making your way here.

The most important thing to remember about Junkyard is that only half of the monument is worth running. If you look at the map below, you will see why: all of the Crate spawns are on one side, with the Shredder (#3) and Modular Car Lift (#4) not far off. Therefore, you should keep to the left/upper side of the monument (relative to this map), where all its value lies — there is no reason to risk being gunned down protecting the worthless half of the monument. While you are at it, make sure to grab whatever gear and material you come across, even if you don’t need it, in order to prevent the grub and primitive players who frequent this location from collecting it instead.

Like most monuments, securing the high ground will be your key to victory. Between the mounds and rickety structures throughout, you will have plenty of options for this. And once you are in an elevated position, guarding the few entrances should be a piece of cake, since most of Junkyard is surrounded by a barbed wire fence. And, when it comes time to leave, there are several jump-out exits that you can take to escape stealthily, loot in hand.

How to Use the Magnetic Crane and Shredder

The magnetic crane and shredder allow you to harvest scrap from unneeded vehicles. You can use the shredder by entering the crane and operating it for 20 Lowgrade per minute. Once you’ve done so, you can drop any vehicle into the shredder to turn it into Scrap Metal (and sometimes other material). The chart below shows the amount of Scrap gained for different vehicles.

Snowmobile50 Scrap Metal
Scrapped Pickup Trucks50 Scrap Metal and 50 Metal Fragments
2-Module Vehicles75 Scrap Metal
3-Module Vehicles125 Scrap Metal
4-Module Vehicles125 Scrap Metal
It is worth noting that it is less efficient to harvest 4-module vehicles than 3-module vehicles because they each produce the same amount of scrap metal.

You can collect extra vehicles to scrap by finding or crafting car parts (or buying them from the Bandit Camp) and bringing them to Junkyard, where you can construct and immediately shred them. To maximize your profit, make sure to remove the modules from any vehicles you plan to scrap, using the normal Recycler to recycle the modules before dropping the empty chassis in the shredder.
