Skyrim On PS4 And Xbox One? Rumor Not True

Skyrim On PS4 and Xbox One

Bad news, Skyrim fans. If you’re a next generation console gamer, you may have been hoping for a Skyrim release for the Playstation 4 and Xbox One. According to a rumor circulating on Reddit, Bethesda was going to make an exciting announcement this Sunday, January 12, 2014. Regrettably, the rumor isn’t true, and there are no immediate plans to release the world’s greatest RPG for the next-gen consoles. Bummer!

Skyrim On PS4 and Xbox One?

The rumor got started innocently enough. A few days ago, Bethesda listed Skyrim on its official website as being available for the PS4 and Xbox One. This caught the attention of many excited gamers, and it seemed as if Bethesda was gearing up to release a next generation version of Skyrim. Just as the rumor started to gain traction on the internet, Bethesda marketing executive Pete Hines set the story straight on Twitter, claiming that the Skyrim on PS4 and Xbox One listing was a mistake:

“We have been working on the CMS that runs our sites. A bug caused platforms that don’t exist to show up for some games. Sorry for confusion.”

Will Skyrim Next-Gen Version Ever Be Released?

Although Pete Hines squashed the Skyrim on PS4 and Xbox One rumor, it doesn’t mean that Bethesda won’t consider releasing a next-gen version of the game at a later date. Far be it from me to start another unsubstantiated rumor, but it my opinion a PS4 and Xbox One version makes sense. Skyrim has sold in excess of 20 million copies after all, and a next-gen version would certainly sell a few million more. Skyrim is complete, and all the heavy lifting is finished. Bethesda could release the game, make the fans happy, and score a nice tidy profit to boot. This is a win-win scenario, so it wouldn’t surprise me to see Skyrim on PS4 and Xbox One sometime in the future.
