Religion – Starfield

Starfield’s developers have said that while the Settled Systems are populated with people of many different faiths and creeds, there are three religions in particular that will play a major role in your story and interactions with other characters. While we can expect to encounter people who subscribe to numerous real-world religions as well, the game will focus much more heavily on these three new religions. The player can even select a Background for their character that will make them a member of one of these three. These backgrounds can offer unique story options like the one in the image below.

Let’s take a look at what we know about each of the three major religions in Starfield.

The Universals

The Universals believe that God is out there in the universe, and that this higher power is guiding humanity’s hand as we make our way further out into the stars. They ascribe the invention of the grav drive to God’s intervention.

The player can choose the Raised Universal trait at character creation, which will make them a member of the Sanctum Universum, the religion’s headquarters in New Atlantis. This will give the player access to a special chest full of items.

The Enlightened

The Enlightened is an organization of atheists who don’t believe in any kind of higher power, but instead have built a coalition around common ideals of community and humanitarianism.

The player can choose the Raised Enlightened trait at character creation, which will make them a member of the House of the Enlightened, the organization’s headquarters in New Atlantis. This will give the player access to a special chest full of items.

The Serpent’s Embrace

The House of Va’ruun is a group of religious zealots who seem to be a little further outside the mainstream, and can even be hostile to the player. Their origins are steeped in mystery, with the rumor going as follows:

The gossip among the guards is this: a colony ship sets off for a new world, making grav jumps along the way. After one of the grav jumps, one of the passengers claims he spent that time communing with a celestial entity known as the Great Serpent. What was a few seconds for everyone else was”¦ much longer for him. And he brought back a mandate, which is basically, “get onboard, or be devoured when the Great Serpent encircles the universe.” Is it true? I ain’t sayin’.

– Emil Pagliarulo, Lead Designer

The player can choose the Serpent’s Embrace trait at character creation, which will make them a believer in the Great Serpent and give them special dialogue options when interacting with House Va’ruun. Rather than having access to a headquarters, this trait will provide bonuses to health and endurance following a grav jump, which will decay the longer you go without jumping.

I love RPGs, sandboxes, survival, and sim games. Anything that lets me build and decorate or just has a really good story. I've spent hundreds of hours in Bethesda games and even more time modding them. I also play a lot of World of Warcraft.
