6 – Peacocks

Background

You’ll trigger this quest by reading the note “Wanted: The White Wolf,” which you can find on several notice boards in Toussaint, including the one at Castel Ravello Vineyard in Toussaint North (#1).

Walkthrough

The note will indicate that Count Beledal would like to hire you as a guide. You’ll find him outside Chuchote Cave in Toussaint North (#2). Beledal will tell you that he likes to “preserve” nature — by wearing a contraption called a parestisomach, which allows him to capture scenes of nature as illusions so he can paint them later.

When you start out (in daylight hours), Beledal will give you Count Beledal’s Map, which will show you where the creatures he’s interested in can be found. He’ll also request that you not kill anything unless it’s absolutely necessary. You’ll then just need to escort Beledal to three sets of creatures:

  • Panthers (#3). When you approach the panthers, you’ll probably detect a bear, which you should stay away from. Then when you eventually reach the panthers, you’ll see that the mother panther has gotten trapped in a snare meant for the bear. If you use Axii on the mother panther to calm it, then when you free her, she’ll get away safely with her cub, and Beledal will get the picture he wants.
  • Centipedes (#4). When you approach the centipedes, you’ll hear them burrowing underground, which will allow you to follow them to their nests. Then when you approach the nests, you’ll have to find a safe spot for Beledal to take his picture. You’ll be given three options for this. The right one is the one south of the nests. Once Beledal is in place, you’ll just need to destroy one of the nests to lure the centipedes out so Beledal can get the picture he wants.
  • Peacocks. Beledal will mark three places where you might find peacocks (#5). At each of these sites, you’ll find an Odorous Peacock Feather on the ground. The scent from the feather will allow you to track down the peacocks (#6). When you reach them, you’ll have to wait for Beledal to find a good place, and then you’ll need to use Axii on three of the peacocks to get them to display their tail feathers. However, once Beledal has taken his picture, a level 37 giant centipede will show up, and you’ll have to kill it.

When you return to Beledal’s camp (#2), he’ll leave to fetch his purse, and while he’s gone you’ll learn the true reason for his excursions — his daughter Clarissa, who fell from a horse and became bedridden, and who can only see the outside world through Beledal’s paintings. When Beledal returns, he’ll pay you what he owes (or less, if you didn’t follow his instructions), and you’ll also receive 150 xp.

After completing the quest, if you did a good job, then Beledal will invite you to a gathering the next day. You’ll find this gathering outside the Scarlet Cardinal Inn in Francollarts (far to the southeast past Beauclair). Beledal will have his three most recent paintings on display, and there will also be lots of free food and alcohol around. When you eventually talk to Beledal, he’ll give you the painting The White Wolf, by Count Beledal, and you’ll also earn 100 xp.

Note: If you attend Beledal’s gathering and ask him about his daughter Clarissa, then you’ll earn the Compassion virtue for the quest There Can Be Only One.
