Background

You’ll trigger this quest when you approach the greenhouse south of Kaer Morhen (#1).

Walkthrough

When you get close to the greenhouse, you’ll notice that it’s unnaturally cold in the area. Then at the greenhouse, you’ll discover a few things of interest: three monoliths arranged in a triangle, evidence of many herbs being grown, and an illusionary rock. When you use the Magic Lamp (gained during the quest An Invitation from Keira Metz) on the rock, you’ll find a Letter from the Resident Mage, which will explain how the greenhouse works.

Note: The quest is a little bit buggy. It’ll allow you to loot the letter before dispelling the illusion, which will complete an objective out of order and cause Geralt to say two things at once. But you’ll still be able to complete the quest.

From the letter you’ll learn that the monoliths can be charged using the elements of fire and water, but that if you use the same element on all three monoliths, then nothing will happen. So to reverse the low temperature at the greenhouse, you’ll need to hit two of the monoliths with Igni (fire) and one with Aard (water). When you do this, the greenhouse will heat up, and a cold-loving level 27 chort will swoop down and attack you. The chort will drop a Chort Mutagen and more when it dies.

To complete the quest, you’ll just need to return to the greenhouse after 24 hours (or simply meditate there for that long). When you arrive, you’ll find the place teeming with a variety of herbs, including HornwortRibleaf, and Wolfsbane. You’ll also earn 25 xp.
