Phantom of the Trade Route – Witcher 3 Quest

This guide is a walkthrough of a contract side quest in the Witcher 3 for the area of Velen. The guide is composed of a map, map legend, and walkthrough to show readers exactly where to go and what to do to complete the quest.

Background

You’ll receive this quest from a refugee in Benek in Velen East (#1).

Walkthrough

The refugee will tell you that three men from Benek were hired as guides for a merchant caravan, but that they have not yet returned. So he’ll ask you to keep an eye open for them.

You’ll find two of the men in a cave system to the north (#2). They’ll tell you that the caravan only wanted them as sacrifices for a “huge lizard” that lives in the area, and that while the two of them were able to escape by fleeing into the cave, the third man wasn’t so lucky. This conversation will earn you 30 xp. You’ll then work out that the lizard must be a royal wyvern.

You’ll find two wyvern nests to the east (#3). Each one will have a level 21 wyvern guarding it, and you’ll probably have to fight them both at the same time. So put some Draconid Oil on your silver sword, and prepare to do some dodging. Once you’ve defeated the wyverns, you should destroy their nests. After destroying the second one, the royal wyvern will appear. It’ll be about as powerful as the other wyverns, but since it’ll be alone, the battle against it might actually be easier.

When the royal wyvern goes down, it’ll drop a Wyvern Trophy and a leveled version of the silver sword Anathema. The two men from the cave will then wander over, and they’ll promise to tell their children about your deeds. Then to complete the quest, you’ll just need to return to the refugee in Benek. When you do so, you’ll receive your negotiated fee plus 250 xp.
