Background

You’ll trigger this quest when you loot Monstrum, or a Portrayal of Witchers: Volume 2 from a chest in the southeastern tower of Kaer Morhen‘s inner keep (#1).

Walkthrough

When you examine the book, you’ll see a note in the margin containing the words, “The book is a key. The mines near Kaer Morhen.” You’ll find the iron mine in question to the southwest (Exit A). Inside, you’ll encounter a level 30 earth elemental (#2). It’s an elementa, obviously, so put some Elementa Oil on your silver sword before starting the fight. The elemental will try to hit you really hard, so use Quen to offset the attacks, and then dodge around as best you can while dealing your own damage. The elemental will drop an Earth Elemental Mutagen and more when it dies.

With the earth elemental out of the way, you should head over to the pedestal in the chamber and examine it (#3). This will cause you to place Monstrum on top of it, which will cause a secret door to the west to open up (#4).

Note: Inside the small chest on the pedestal, you’ll find the diagram for Superior Wolven Gauntlets.

In the chamber beyond the secret door, you’ll find the forge (#5). You’ll sense magic about it, and when you turn on your witcher senses, the two bellows in front of it will turn red. When you examine one of them, a level 30 ifrit / fire elemental will wake up and attack you.

The ifrit is an elementa just like the earth elemental earlier, so using some more Elementa Oil (if necessary) is a good idea. The ifrit is immune to fire, so don’t try using Igni against it. Quen will prevent you from taking burning damage when you get hit by one of its fire attacks. Aard will remove its fire shield, allowing you to damage it. Otherwise, just try to dodge around the ifrit as best you can. When it dies, it’ll drop a Golem’s Heart and more.

Defeating the ifrit will douse the fire in the forge. When you then examine the forge using The Eye of Nehaleni (from the quest Wandering in the Dark), you’ll detect that the back wall is an illusion. This discovery will complete the quest and earn you 25 xp. Behind the forge you’ll find three treasure chests containing random pieces of armor, including possibly Mastercrafted Wolven Armor.
